In 1968 John Deere contracted with Wagner 4wds to build a "green" 4wd. The 8020 models were dropped in 1965 because of poor sales. John Deere decided to go to an outside supplier for its 4wds the second time around. Wagner was a pioneer in the 4wd market and offered a good product. Wagner signed an agreement to only build John Deere 4wds and not market their own 4wd or build for any other company. This seemed like a good deal for both companies. John Deere offerd a WA-14 rated at 225 hp and a WA-17 at 280 hp. In 1970 John Deere released its own 4wd and dropped Wagner as a supplier. After John Deere released its 7020 4wd and later 7520, Wagner was still locked into it no-compete clause and no longer could produce tractors.  Eldon Trumm  produced a 1/16 scale  WA-17 that today brings $800 or more. Larry Buhler offered a 1/64 scale WA-17 in the early 1990's. In 2002 Don Cambell built a 1/16 scale WA-17 from steel.
