Versatile 895 Series III

May 2001: by Randall Barnard

This is a 1984 Model Versatile 895 Series III.  Series III Versatile tractors are also known as "Candy Stripers" as they have the stripes on the sides of the cab and also have black hoods.  The 895 used a Cummins 6 Cylinder, 855 Cubic-Inch Engine, with 5.5 x 6.0 inch bore and stroke  which was rated at 310 HP and 261 Drawbar HP.  895's used a Constant Mesh Transmission which featured 12 Forward/4 Reverse  Speeds.   The hydraulic system offered 4 remotes also 3 point hitch was available. My dad purchased this tractor new and it came with the 3 point.  We didn't have any use for the 3 point and so we had it removed.   At 310 horses it had adequate  power to pull our 30 ft. Richardson Sweep Plow, a 17 ft. Krause Chisel Plow Stalk Slicer at 12 inches deep, and our Krause 42 ft. Field Cultivator with a Martens harrow attached.  The photo shows the same cultivator and harrow.  I might add that harrow is a prototype model.   Here in Oklahoma it is popular to run a field cultivator and a harrow together ahead of the grain drill when sowing winter wheat here in the fall. One of my favorite memories of this tractor was when I was plowing a 100 acre field.   The ground was terrible hard and I tore up our 9x16 Blanchat Moldboard plow 3 times before I finished plowing that 100 acres. This tractor is easy to operate and is economical on fuel.   I still use a 1975 800 Versatile, but the 895 is still the best to in terms of operator convenience and fuel economy
