4wd Tractors - 8850
In 1982 the 40 series 4wds were replaced by the 50 series. In addition to the
185 hp 8450 and 235 hp 8650, John Deere added 8850, a new power house model at 370 hp and 304 pto hp. This model featured a turbocharged and inter-cooled V8 diesel engine
designed and built by John Deere at Waterloo. The 8850 had a wider grille
with 6 headlamps, compared to the four on the smaller 6-cylinder models. All
three models had their exhaust and air intake moved to the right cab corner
for improved field vision. Ertl offered the 8850 in 1/64 scale from 1982-1988. The first run of 8850's in 1982 are known as the "wrong color" models. The paint is a lighter green than John Deere green. The 8850 on the left above is the mistake model and the 8850 on the right is the correct model. A power-pull 8850 was offered until 1996.
