4wd Tractors - 8650
The John Deere 8650 was the best selling John Deere 4wd of the 1980's. The 8650 was the answer to farmers requests for improvements on visibility, hydraulic couplers, lighting and shifting on the 8630 and 8640 4wds. The 8650 had a new muffler and air cleaner intake mounted on the right corner of the Sound-Gard cab to significantly improve the operators forward view. Powered up at 235 hp the 8650 was equipped with a high torque engine, shift on the go Quad-Range transmission and hydraulic differential locks, which made heavy tillage easy and tractor adaptable for row crop work. A farmer could set the wheel tread for plowing and leave it there for secondary tillage. Then space the wheels (including duals) for row crop planting and cultivating in 30 inch rows. For interim jobs such as powering pto equipment the 8650 was also an excellent 4wd choice. The 8650 was well suited for pto work in a single tire row crop setting to pull large forge harvesters like the 4 row 3970 pull-type forage harvester or the 7721 pull-type combine. Ertl first offered a 1/16 8650 Collector's Edition in 1982 for John Deere's dealer introduction of the 50 series tractor line in New Orleans. This was the first time a John Deere 4wd from Ertl was offered with a model number rather than as a generic model like the "7520", "8630" and "8640" models offered in the 1970's. The shelf edition of the 8650 was a generic model and did not have a model number decal. John Deere offered its toys this way until the late 1980's so young farmers could pretend it was dad's 4wd whether it was an 8450 or 8650. The shelf "8650" was also offered in a set with a centerfold disk. In 1989 the toy 8650 model was replaced by the shelf edition 8560 and 8760 4wds.
