Moldboard Plows

Big capacity, high clearance trailing plows were available in sizes from International Harvester from 5-furrow 16 inch to 16-furrow 18 inch. The gaints of the IH line with 9 to 16 bottoms were designed to take maximum advantage of powerful 4wd tractors.  IH recommended a minimum of 350 hp for pulling the 16 bottom plow. Any tractor smaller than 350 hp would not have been built with a heavy duty transmission or strong enough draw bar to hold up to the load a 16 bottom plow would give it.  The IH 4786 4wd at 350 hp was best suited for pulling the 16 bottom plow of any IH tractor. A large farmer would feel a little more comfortable pulling such a large plow with a Steiger ST-450 or ST-470 Turbo Tiger.  IH had a 20% share in the Steiger company.

IH's exclusive, patented Flex-Frame design, with frame hinged center, permited vertical flexibility over uneven ground surfaces for uniform plowing depth across the entire width of the cut. C&D Models builds 1/64 16 bottom plow kits and is licensed by Case Corp. to build IH 4wds.
