1950-T

The Oliver 1950-T was powered by a  turbocharged 310 cu. in. Oliver/Waukesha engine.  Oliver offered this 105 hp turbocharged model from from 1967-1969.  Oliver was eager to join the turbocharged market to compete with the 100+ tractors released by International Harvester, John Deere and Allis-Chalmers throughout the decade of the 1960's. Oliver looked at the challenge this way: diesel engines  must take in allot of air to function smoothly.  The more a tractor operator demands from an engine the more air it needs.  Each cylinder needs a supply of air to provide compression in order to create engine combustion as fuel is injected.  A turbocharged engine helps force more air into the engine. The turbocharger acts as an air pump. In 1967 Oliver married a Waukesha engine with turbocharger technology to increase power out put, reduce engine noise, improve fuel efficiency, and add powerful lugability in the field.  Oliver's efforts to create a turbocharged tractor resulted in the 1950-T.  An Oliver turbo gave farmers extra drawbar pull, smooth throttle response and fast engine recovery.  Oliver created this extra power by dividing the exhaust manifold that splits the firing order  to drive the turbine with strong and steady pulsations at all engine speeds.  Oliver stressed that when the going got heavy their turbocharged 1950-T would make all the difference. The 1950-T was available with optional mechanical front wheel drive and cab. The 1950-T had a wider frame as compared to the 6 cylinder tractors, thus special loaders and all other front mounted equipment had to be made for the tractor. The Oliver 1950(GM Detroit Diesel) had wider tub frame, and needed special attachments  which  one of the reasons the 1950-T came into being: to do away with the oddball frame and it's special equipment requirements. The 1950-T could use the same loaders, and mounted cultivators and sprayers as the 1750 & 1850, whereas the GM-powered 1950 could not. The later 1755, 1855, & 1955 still could use the same attachments as the 1950-T. The 1950-T was a 6 cylinder tractor Oliver's parent company White-Motors also offered the 1950-T as a Cockshutt model through their Canadian based subsidiary.  The 2002 National Farm Toy Show tractor from the Toy Farmer Magazine is a 1/16 and 1/64 Oliver 1950-T.  The 1/16 scale model is a highly detailed featuring fender fuel tanks with lights, dual air cleaners, dual rear tires with a Goodyear designation, fwa front tires, good engine detail and a 3pt hitch.
