What was new and exciting at the 2002 National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, KY?

February 2002: by Kevin Breisch

A New Holland Corn Planter? Yes the New Holland SP480 runs down the same CNH line as the CaseIH 1200 AFS planter. New Holland will market its new planter line in the American dairy belt where there line of tractors and hay equipment are strong sellers with farmers.
Here is another surprise. New Holland is breaking into tillage.  The last time the company had a blue field cultivator, was all the back in 1990 when the company was called Ford-New Holland. This New Holland ST250 field cultivator has strong roots. It is built by DMI another CNH company. Notice the DMI name on the decal.
AGCO really made a mark at the show with its Fendt 926 Work Horse. Those duals up front really make this tractor look like its ready to work.  This tractor is set up for tillage. The 926 is rated at 240hp so it is no slouch in the field.
The 926 Work Horse is also available as a reverse station model with a 3pt hitch in the front and back. That is pretty handy when mowing a few acres of hay.
Lets climb up in the cab. The Fendt 926 is ultra modern and has a functional cab layout. You can run forward and backwards in the reverse station model depending on how you hook up your implements. Notice the seat, steering wheel and controls are point out the back window in this picture.
White is making a new spin style planter similar to the Kinze and the new Case IH AFS 1200s.  This planter will look pretty nice behind a new AGCO DT or Massey Ferguson.
Caterpillar had the new MT 800 series on display. The MT 800 line replaces the popular E series from CAT. The MT 800 is making news not only as a new series but also because it is now owned and produced by AGCO. Caterpillar dealers will still see the MT800 and 700 series tractors along with a new tire line called challenger based from the AGCO RT and DT line.  The top model MT865 is rated at 500 hp.
Once again CAT has the biggest dog on the block. The 500 hp version is running a whopping 964cu. in. engine (C-16). This engine can be turned up to 650 hp. All of these tractors can be set up to row crop.  The new size range from 340hp (mt845 w/C-12), 380hp (mt845 w/C12), 450 (mt855 w/C15), and 500 (mt865 W/C-16). the mt865 will grow up to 540 ghp at full pull. all of this along with 25 mph transport speed and a 16 speed powershift transmission will once again put cat on the cutting edge of tractor technology.
John Deere and CaseIH also had nice displays. There was not anything un announced at these displays. Now that AGCO/CAT has a 500 hp tractor rumors were circulating that John Deere may be introducing a 500 hp 9620T. No doubt CNH will jump into the high horse power race to surpass 500 hp too. Next year we should see big new row crop tractors in the 275 hp range and combines up to a reported 375 hp from the CNH brands of CaseIH and New Holland.
