TTS Farm Toy Report: June 2003 Issue #14

TTS-Times

The days are growing longer and warmer. June is one of my favorite months as we change from spring to summer.  The fields are alive with new crops and equipment.  Depending on where you live you could see combines harvesting wheat, hay mowers cutting or air drills just hitting the land to sow spring wheat.

The hay crop here in KY is almost all baled and the wheat fields are turning golden.  We should see combines in the field with in the next two weeks.  BigTractorPower.com will bring you pictures of the Kentucky wheat harvest on Garrent Farms 5,500 acres of wheat as several big combines harvest and 4wd tractors shuttle grain carts and double crop in soybeans with air drills.

There are many new toys on dealers shelves this month that have been previewed here on TTS and The Toy Tractor Times.  AGCO and New Holland have had a good showing so far in 2003.  John Deere released some of its 2003 surprises at the end of May. There are still more green items on the way in 2003. With the introduction of the 77720, 7820 and 7920 tractors this summer more news on toy versions should be out soon.  The new John Deere 60 series combines should yield some new harvesting toys as well.  CaseIH normally releases a few surprises in late summer so stay tuned.  There are still a few surprises on the way from New Holland too.

This month after two years of interactive chat and monthly question and answer features with RC/Ertl Farm Toy Manager Bill Walters you will have a chance to answer Ertl's questions.  In an effort to have more collector involvement in the new toy development process, Bill will ask you the collector questions Ertl is interested in getting your view on.

The second annual TTS auction will begin  Sunday June 8, 2003.   In this issue you can review the items  that will be available in the auction.  The highlight custom piece is a scraper set built in 1/64 by Gordy Schultz and first featured in the May Toy Tractor Times. There are several other great custom pieces and collectors items.

The Toy Tractor Times theme this moth is the county fair.  The June issue will feature several tractor pulling articles, fair memories of new tractors and a new feature that will begin a series on display building.  The series will be called "Down on the Model Farm."  The first part will focus on helping collectors build the mega grain farm covering thousands of acres.  This size farm is a popular topic on Toy Talk and hopefully The Toy Tractor Times can help you focus on building a realistic and fun display. This first set of articles will be called "The Mighty Acres Farm" will review choosing the right 4wds for your display, then the matching the proper combine, best sized tractors, implements and buildings.  These articles will run from June through the end of the year. Future series will look at the vintage farm stead and dairy displays.  If you are interested in this type of article visit www.toytractortimes.com .

In July the TTS Farm Toy Report and The Toy Tractor Times will  feature the wheat harvest.  If you have articles or project pictures for the Farm Toy Report or all new ToyTractorTimes.com  e-mail Jason Hasert at Webmaster@toytractorshow.com.

AGCO

Scale Models will release the toy model of the AGCO Challenger MT765 at the Dyersville, Iowa Summer Toy Show held on 6,7, and 8.  The first version of the MT765 will be a collectors model.  The 1/16 model will feature hand rails, steps and a nicely detailed cab.  A 1/64 model is also being introduced along with the 1/16 models. The MT765 is one of the nicest tractors to come from Scale Models since the New Holland TJ 375, 450 and 425 4wds.

The Toy Tractor Times first reported in March that Ertl would release AGCO Challenger wheeled tractors.  In May the first Challenger was released in a set including an MT tractor, SC12 mower and tandem disk. This set looks like another great AGCO offering and can be found a Challenger dealers.  The set includes an MT665 tractor  with fwa and duals although it was first reported to include an MT655 tractor with fwa and singles. This first set may be a mistake.  TTS will report on the set again in July to clear up this story.

You can now purchase a Challenger MT665 at Challenger dealers.  This model is another great offering from AGCO's toy line.

The latest large tire 1/64 big tire tractor is out.  The new MF 8270 features large European style tires perfect for good flotation in plowing and forage harvesting operations.  This new 8270 is the third MF 8200 series tractor by Ertl in 1/64 following the 8280 collectors model with rear triples and shelf model with duals.  This month The Toy Tractor Times Magazine will review the history of 1/64 tires on models from the 1972 MF 1155 through models like the new Euro tire MF 8270.

The Oliver 1950-T with fwa is at AGCO dealers now. This popular model has been a hot topic on Toy Talk.  You can check your local AGCO dealer or an on-line toy vendor on the TTS Links page.  To read more about the 1950-T click here.

Big Bud

The biggest 1/64 tractor ever will be released to collectors at the North Dakota Farm Toy Show hosted by Toy Farmer on June 14 and 15th.  The 760 hp Factory Version Big Bud 16V-747 This new 16V-747 towers over other 1/64 tractors.  It will make a nice addition to any collection or display.

This new CaseIH will offer 500 hp to pull the biggest implements.  CaseIH dealers already have literature showing the tire version of the STX 500.  Full production of these new STX leaders will begin in August.  Look for new 1/16 and 1/64 STX 500 toys latter this fall.  Maybe for the  Fall Farm Shows.  The STX 500 will differ from the STX 450 with 50 more hp, a new muffler, new battery box and the Quad-Trac version has slightly modified tracks like the real STX 500 Quad-Trac pictured here.

June Question And Answer by Bill Walters RC/Ertl Farm Toy Manager
In March 2001 Bill Walters the Farm Toy Product Manager  began taking part in question and answer forums on Toy Tractor Show.com with toy tractor collectors.  Over the past two plus years we the collector have asked Bill the questions. Starting with the June 2003  TTS Farm Toy Report, Bill will ask us the questions. This new format will allow collectors to see what Ertl is thinking about for future farm toy products and participate in that future by giving their opinion.  This new format will operate on a polling system where you the collector read Bill's question and then respond by voting in a poll.
#1.  Our current Precision Classics and Precision Series lines have been going in the same series since the early 90's.  We are currently at #23 in John Deere and will have #20 out this Fall for Case IH..  Do you think we should end the current series shortly and start over with a new Precision Series of vintage units, or should we continue on with the current series for the foreseeable future?   Click Here to Answer

#2.  Over the past few years we have offered some 1/64th tractors and implements only as sets as opposed to individual units on cards.  Do you prefer to buy the individual pieces you want, or are the sets we are producing OK.   Click Here to Answer

#3.  Do you buy most of your replicas through an OEM dealership, farm toy dealer or retail store? Click Here to Answer

#4.  What percentage of your collection consists of customized toys? Click Here to Answer

#5.  Most of our competitors produce only "collectible" product that doesn't pass child safety standards.  Our "shelf/play units" have to have some details removed to pass all the applicable government standards.  Are most of the units you buy bought as a collectible or for people to play with?     Click Here to Answer

TTS-Times Notes

Last month there was a strong response to the TTS Notes on haying on a 1/64 display.  Many 1/64 collectors on TTS are interested in building 1/64 farms and displays. Starting in the June Toy Tractor Times Magazine I am going to start a series on building a display. To start we will look at picking out the right sized equipment for a display and what factors go into choosing the right piece of machinery for a certain farm size.   The June issue will talk about choosing the right 4wd tractor for a display. In July we will look at choosing the right sized combine to match your display farms wheat harvest.  If you are interested in this series join The Toy Tractor Times Magazine at www.toytractortimes.com .
