High Yielding Performance

The John Deere 8640 carried Deere's 4wd line out of the 1970's and into the 1980's.  John Deere promoted the 8640 as a  "High-Yield Investment" telling farmers to collect the  immediate payoff of 4-wheel drive and pocket John Deere value for the future. The 8640 had 275 eng. hp/228 PTO hp just eaking past the 8630s hp it replaced. The Sound-Guard body, hydracushioned seat suspension system, perma-clutch, and Quad-Range transmission were all scored big points with farmers looking for big iron to run their operations. Ertl offered a 1/16 scale 8640 from 1980 to 1982. The model was not numbered so a young farmer could pretend it was an 8440 or 8640 but it commonly understood the Ertl model is the 8640.  There is no difference in the 1/16 scale 8640 and the 8630 it replaced outside of the 40 series strobe decal. The 8640 came in the same Blue Print Replica box that the 8630 did. At the end of the 8640 run in 1982 a few mistake models were run with the new 8650 cab. The mistake 8640 is pictured above out of the box. Notice the cab door windows are smaller than the 8640 in the box above it.  In 1988 Ertl re-released the 8640 for retail store sales only. This late 1980's 8640 had the strobe decal and was on single tires. It was produced because Ertl had body castings left over from the 8650/40/30 run and 8650 cabs. The new 8670/50 model replaced the 8650 and John Deere dealers so Ertl made a limited run of 8640's to use up the castings.
