John Deere 7920

Toy History

The 1/64 Fall Farm Show Edition  John Deere 7920 and Shelf Edition 7820 were introduced by Ertl in September 2003.  These new 7020 toys replaced the 1/64 7000 series casting first introduced in 1993 with the 1/64 7800.  The 7800 toy raised the level of detail and size of 1/64 in 1993 and now in 2003 the 7920 raises the level with a detailed 3pt hitch, windowed cab, fwa mud flaps and row crop duals. Both the 7920 and 7820 will have flood lights cast on the roof.  Ertl also offered a  1/16th 7920 Collector Edition unit for John Deere Waterloo Works.  These units are only available to the factory workers in Waterloo.  This unit has a 3pt hitch, cab glass, mirrors, front fenders, warning arms, and a special tampo on the hood denoting the John Deere Waterloo Works. A 1/16 Collectors Edition 7920 is due out in December 2003.

Real History

The John Deere large-frame 7020 series tractors consist of the 7720 at 140 PTO hp, the 7820 at 155 PTO hp and the new flagship 7920 with 170 PTO hp.  These tractors were an impressive follow-up to their predecessors, with more power, more fuel capacity, more options, more comfort, more maneuverability and incorporated all the best features of the tried-and-true 7000 and 7010 series tractors, and also top-of-the-line features from the popular 8020 series tractors.

At only slightly over 1' shorter than the 8020s, and 2000lbs lighter, the 7020s are sure to be winners in the fields.  These tractors are powered by John Deere 6.8L and 8.1L High Pressure Common Rail  (HPCR) engines, which meet and exceed Tier II emission standards and deliver 'performance that pays".  The 7020s have a large range of features to suit any farmers needs, such as 5 different front axle options, 16 speed, 20 speed and IVT transmissions (IVT is standard on the 7920), the CommandArm controls, the new 746 loader with a breakout force of over 9000lbs, 6 SCVs, John Deere ActiveSeat and TLS II for a smooth ride, FieldVision HID lighting, right-hand doors, larger tires, electronically adjustable mirrors, the list just keeps going...

These agile tractors were first presented to dealers on August 6, 2003 at the John Deere Dealer's Intro in Columbus, Ohio.  At that Intro, it was revealed that these tractors had actually begun full production on August 4, a full 3 days before any dealer had ever seen them!  John Deere Factory employees at the Intro discussed how these tractors were 'absolutely field-ready', as they had been more or less ready for at least a year prior to their launch.  It was the continued success of the 7710 and 7810 tractors (which enjoyed a market share of over 80% in North America), that allowed John Deere to confidently hold back the 7020s; to be sure that these new tractors were field-tested sufficiently that they would hold up to farmer’s demands for a tractor with almost zero down time.
