The Start of Market Leadership

Above on the left is the 1968 Deere 105 combine equipped with a 6
slat grain platform and on the right is a 95 model with a four row 435 corn
head. John Deere made a major contribution to self-propelled design in 1946
with the introduction of the 55 combine. It was the first machine in the
industry to center the operator on top and locate the grain tank and engine
directly behind the operator. This gave better weight balance, with or with
out grain in the tank. It was also a cleaner, quieter location for the
engine. The 90 hp, 40-inch cylinder, 75 bushel 95 combine was introduced in
1958 for farmers with growing needs. By 1961 farmers were looking for an
even larger model, which John Deere provided with the 105 combine. The 105
could handle a 22-foot header with its 105 hp engine and 85 bushel grain
tank. By the last year of production in 1968, the 105 had a 100 bushel
capacity. Ertl introduced a 1/64 John Deere 95 in 1996. In the fall of 2001 a 1/16 model 45 combine will be released by Ertl and John Deere.
