Iron Horses of the 30 series

The 1970's were a time of transition for John Deere tractors. The
4-wheel-drive market was entered successfully with the 7020 and 7520 models.
In early 1975 the the popularity of the new 80-180 hp Sound-Guard body
models, the demand for an update to the articulated 4wd was met with the
178 hp 8430 and 225 hp 8630. The new models brought new options to large
scale farmers such as 16 speed Quad-Range constant mesh transmission,
Perma-Clutch, power brakes, closed center hydraulics, three remote cylinder
outlets and independent 1,000 rpm PTO. The new Sound Guard cab provided new comfort and operator safety.  The 30 series 4wds were updated to the
40 series in 1979 with slightly increased horse power. Ertl offered a 1/16 8630 from 1975-1978. Roy Lee Baker offered a 1/64 John Deere 8630  tractor  for the Gateway Mid-America show in St. Louis, but it latter ended up as a shelf model.  The 8630 returned as the 2002 Gateway Mid-America show tractor and was offered with triples.
