TTS Farm Toy Report: January 2004 Issue #21

TTS-Times

Welcome to the 21st issue of the Toy Tractor Show.com Farm Toy Report.  The Year 2004 marks TTS's 4th year on the world wide web.  It is hard to imagine that TTS is closing in on 4 years.  It is my hope that TTS has helped make the farm toy hobby more interesting and stronger.

If you thought 2003 was a good year for farm toys, 2004 should prove to be even bigger.  We are all awaiting the release of the 2004 Ertl toy guides.  We will not have to wait too much longer.  The guide releases will follow with John Deere in February, CaseIH in March and AGCO in April.  From what I am hearing all three brands have lots of surprises on the way.

2004 is also a big year for the tractor makers.   February 7, 2004 will mark the 200th birthday of Deere and Company's founder John Deere.  Ertl has 4 special 1/16 tractors and a big 1/64 historical set on the way to help mark the 200th birthday of Mr. Deere.  November 26, 1984 is the date that International Harvester joined forces with Case to form CaseIH.  Nearly 20 years later CNH is the largest tractor producer in the world.  It will be interesting to see if any special CaseIH toys are released to mark the anniversary.

The 23rd Annual Gateway Mid-America Toy Show at the Airport North Holiday Inn, I-70 & Lindbergh Blvd is next weekend. Hours: Fri. Noon to 9 p.m., Sat. 9 a.m to 9 p.m.; Sun. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For info call (618) 836-7787.  The St. Louis show is a great show for all collectors to enjoy.  It is on par with the National offering big name toy dealers and a custom toy and display contest.  The March Toy Tractor Times will cover all the events of the St. Louis Show.

New Toy News

AGCO

Thank you to everyone who ordered the AC 7030 2003 Toy Tractor Times 20th Anniversary Edition.  This tractor should prove to be a collectible model in years to come.  A total of 1,092 tractors were sold.  Ertl will be producing the tractors very soon and we look for an early March shipping date.  We are already working on the 2004 model and second in the 1970's series.  We will announce  the 19th TTT tractor in August.

Spec-Cast has produced a limited run of 1,000 Hart-Parr No. 3  tractor.  The Hart-Parr No. 03 was built in 1903 and turned 100 years old just last year. Hart-Parr is an Agco Heritage tractor through the Oliver/White line.  The Hart-Parr is one of the oldest tractors in North America and is part of the Smithsonian Institute. The 1/16 scale No. 03 is retailing for around $140.

The Oliver Super 77 Narrow Front from Spec-Cast offers a new high detail casting from Spec-Cast.  Released in January 2004 the new Oliver Super 77 is the first AGCO Heritage tractor to come from Spec-Cast in high detail.  It offers the same level of precise tooling that the Spec-Cast IH Farmalls.  The real Oliver Super 77 was offered from 1954-58 and delivered 40 belt horse power.

The Minneapolis-Moline U narrow front is the second high detail AGCO Heritage 1/16 scale tractor from Spec-Cast.  The U like the Super 77 was released in January 2004.  Minneapolis-Moline produced the U from 1939-1955.  At the end of its production the U toped out at 39 draw bar hp and 44 belt hp.

Big Bud

Toy Farmer  in conjunction with Die-Cast Promotions is rounding out its Big Bud 16V-747 series with two 1/16 models in 2004.  These massive 1/16 scale versions of the Factory and Modern 16V-747 are most likely the worlds largest 1/16 scale farm toy models. Order directly by calling the Toy Farmer office toll-free at 1-800-533-8293.

CaseIH

CaseIH has reintroduced the Farmall name in its tractor line with the DX series.  CaseIH and Ertl are marking the Farmall name with two historical sets in 2004. Look for a 1/64 four piece CaseIH Farmall 100, 200, 300, 400 Collector Set in April 2004.  The Hundred Series were released by IH in 1955 and replaced the landmark letter series Farmalls that were launched in 1939 with the M and H.  1/64 collectors looking for a lawn mower for their displays will be glad to have the 20 hp Farmall 100.

CaseIH released its first 1/16 boxed Farmall Collectors set in 2003 with the Farmall 806 and 706.   A second Farmall set is planned for 2004.  The set will include the Farmall A, B and C.  These Farmalls replaced many horses on 40 ace farms and introduced mechanized row crop cultivating to the small farmer with Culti-Vision steering.

The large single European style tire trend continues in 2004 from Ertl.  Next up is the CaseIH MX-255 Magnum with MFD and Floatation Tires.  The new MX will be released in February 2004.  The new MX 255 shares the same casting as the MX 285 released in December with new rounded fenders and hood casting.

Ertl released the IH 1486  Red Power Edition in December.  This new model completes the 86 series offerings from Ertl that started in 1977 with the 886, 1086 and 1586. In February 2003 Ertl introduced a 1981 Tri-Stripe 986 with a loader.  The missing link 1486 offers another IH twist with 1980 Red Power decals.  This model has the classic steaming IH Branding Iron decal on the hood and Red Power demonstrator decal.  The 1486 also has proper IH row crop duals with an inside red spindle wheel with silver trim and an all red dished outside dual.

The next 1/16 MX Magnum from Ertl with be a CaseIH MX 255 with European tires and round fenders.  This big red tractor is due out in February.

In January 2003 CaseIH introduced its largest tractor ever with the release of the STX 500.   Ertl will release a special STX 500 collectors set in May 2004. The set will include a 1/16 STX 500 with large duals, cab mirrors and a rear hazard light bar.  The second tractor in the set is a chrome 1/64 STX 500.  The STX 500's have a new muffler and hood sheet metal alterations over the STX 375-450.  1/64 STX 500 tire and Quad-Trac models are also due out in 2004.

In December CaseIH and Ertl introduced two 1/32 CaseIH AFX 8010 combines.  The collectors edition has duals, hand rails, a moving cross auger on the 2412 corn head and rear tail lights.  The shelf edition is built for play.  It does not have all the extra detail but the ladder swings around and it has the 12 row corn head and 30ft grain head.

In 2000 Scale Models introduced a 1/16 scale version of the original 1958 Steiger nicknamed Barney #1.   All new for 2004 Scale Models will introduce a 1/16 Barney #2 Steiger 2200.

In December 2003 Ertl released the long awaited 1/16 100,000th MX 285 Magnum.  This Collectors Edition Magnum has the 100K Magnum rivet decal and demonstrator decal on the cab door window.  This model celebrates 100,000 Magnums built since their introduction in 1987.  Ertl offered a special 1/16 7250 Magnum on singles in 1994 when 50,000th Magnum was produced.

Farmers searching for versatility will find the features they need to meet their needs in the new Case IH MXU Series tractor. The new Case IH MXU Series Maxxum® tractor line offers producers the perfect blend of features and options for row-crop, loader and general-purpose applications. Three models range from 80 to 105 PTO horsepower. In December Ertl released a Collectors Edition of the 105 hp MXU125 Maxxum.  This model features an opening hood, 3pt hitch and windowed cab.

C&D Models

C&D is proud to announce that it will produce a 1/64 4100 series dozer blade for Grouser Products.  The 4100 blade is built tough for use on the industries largest 4wds. This blade can be mounted on everything from the new CaseIH STX 500 and John Deere 9620T.  The blade will also fit classic models like the C&D Versatiles and Steiger kits.  Grouser blades are known for their strength in big pushing jobs for silage and dirt.  To see pictures of 4100 blades in action click here

In March 2003 C&D Models introduced a large double folding packer to hook on the 72ft field cultivator.  Now C&D is brining out a licensed Brillion X-wing packer for the 43ft C&D field cultivator.  This model is perfect for display farms looking for a packer to hook onto the 43ft cultivator or tow separately with a tractor.

John Deere

In 1959 John Deere introduced its first 4wd.  The original 8010 put out 200 hp.  Both the 8010 and transmission experienced some reliability problems, resulting in the recall of the 4wds and upgrade changes to the 8020.  The 8020 was an impressive tractor in its day when John Deere largest 2wd the 5010 offered only 121 hp.  From 1960-1966 101 8020's were sold.  Big hp tractors would not come into their own until the 1970's.  Today the first John Deere 8020 is a highly revered collectible due to its rarity.  Later this year Ertl will release a 1/64 8020 4wd.

To help mark the 200th Birth of John Deere the black smith who built the plow that broke the plains in 1837, Ertl will release a 10 piece 1/64 historical set of historic John Deere.  The set includes a Waterloo Boy, Unstyled B, B, 730, 4020, 4430, 4450 w/duals, 8400 and 9520 w/triples. These tractor represent each decade of tractor production at the John Deere Waterloo Works.  Collectors have long awaited a 1/64 version of the 450 hp 9520.  This spring Ertl will also release 1/64 versions of the 500 hp 9620 and 9620T.

Looking for a DOT tractor to mow the roadsides of your model farm? John Deere and Ertl will offer a new 1/64 DOT orange 6220 and mower later this year.

Here is a nice surprise.  A 1/64 John Deere 9320 on singles.  In 2001 Ertl released a 9220 on singles in a semi hauling set. With the addition of the 9320 you can now purchase a 9220 with a JD semi, 9320 w/triples kit, 9320T in a tillage set, 9420 w/triples, 9420T, 9520 w/triples in the 200 Birthday set, 9620, 9620T.

Here is the first Sound-Gard variation in 1/64: a   John Deere 4240 Cab Tractor with 535 Baler.  This set offers a great variation for collectors and displayers.  Look for more Sound-Gards to follow the 4240.

John Deere is set to kick off its 500 hp 9620 with a collectors Edition 1/16 9620 and a gold plated 1/64 9620 set. The real 9620 will be introduced in June 2004.

February 7th marks the 200th Birth of John Deere, the founder of Deere and Company.  Ertl will offer 4 tractors to mark Mr. Deere's birthday.  First up in the John Deere 200th Anniversary Series is the  BW on Steel with Umbrella set for release in February.  The  #2 4520 with Hiniker cab and duals will be released in May.  #3 the John Deere 4020 w/cab will follow in July and #4 the John Deere 830  will round out the set in August.

In December Ertl released a 1/32 John Deere 9860 STS Collectors Edition.  This model was a huge hit at dealers and toy shows.  This model has plenty of detail with moving cross auger on the corn head, fingers on the grain head real, hand rails and dual tires.  A shelf edition 9760 STS with out the hand rails and dual tires will follow in February.

In December John Deere and Ertl released a collectors edition of the all new 7920.  This special model offered impressive detail with hand and grab rails, fender hazard light bars, gps, mud guards, cab windows, can flood lights and a working 3pt hitch.  The box is also very nice using pictures of the real pictures of the 7920 and the marketing slogan "the 24/7's."  A 7820 on fat singles will follow in 2004.

New Holland

New Holland released a 1/16 collectors edition TS-135A in December.  Now a shelf edition TS-115A Tractor w/loader is available.  This model has a decaled 56BL loader which is a great extra over past generic Ertl loaders.

Ertl had a big month in December with three new 1/32 combines including a highly detailed New Holland CR970.  In January New Holland and Ertl released a shelf edition CR960 pictured here.  This model lacks duals and hand rails but still has a swinging ladder and 30ft grain head and 12 row corn head.

February Top 10 Question And Answer by Bill Walters RC/Ertl Farm Toy Manager
Since March 2001 Bill Walters the farm toy product manager for Racing Champions/Ertl has taken an active role on ToyTractorShow.com listening to collectors interests and answering their questions. Starting with the May Farm Toy Report Mr. Walters  answers the top 10 monthly topics on TTS Toy Talk. Below are areas of interest brought up by Toy Talk Members here on ToyTractorShow.com over the past month with answers from Bill Walters. TTS webmaster Jason Hasert selects the questions.
Question #1: As we  start 2004 what was Ertl's greatest farm Toy Accomplishment for 2003?

Answer #1: I will leave that up to your readers...  We introduced over 130 new items this year.  I would be hard pressed to pick just one or two.

Question #2:  What advancements in tooling can collectors expect to see in 2004 on the different scales and models Ertl offers.

Answer #2:  I believe you will continue to see added detail with all scales.  I think we made good progress in 2003 and hope to do even better in 2004.

Question #3:  The new CNH and John Deere combines coming from Ertl look very nice.  Are these collectors editions? If they are how will the shelf models differ?

Answer #3:  For the shelf versions we will remove the railings, mirrors and dual front wheels.  The shelf units will still retain both corn and grain heads, but not with all the graphics of the collector versions.

Question #4:   Last month you mentioned the Precision series will change soon.  Can you give any general details on what changes are in store  for the series and when we might expect to see the change?  For example is it box changes, tooling changes or something else?

Answer #4:  There will be changes, but we are not ready to discuss at this time.

Question #5:  Will we see more 1/16 implements in 2004?    The John Deere 2700 and the CNH DMI rippers were nice surprise in late 2002.

Answer #5: We do have new implements planned for 2004.  Nothing to announce at this time.

Question #6: What is the out for 1/64 implements in 2004.  Will the tillage and planting offerings expand. Any chances for new hay and forage items?

Answer #6:  Expect new implements in both 1/32nd and 1/64th for 2004.  Hay and Forage will be represented.

Question #7: The 1/32 Precision II John Deere 9750 STS and the CaseIH STX 450 were retired in 2003.  Does this mean there will be additional precision II models next year to expand the series?

Answer #7: Our current plans for Series II Precisions are to release new models in 2005.

Question #8: In your interview in the October Toy Tractor Times you talked about the new John Deere 5020 pedal tractor.  This is an impressive new pedal highlighting a big tractor from the 1960's. Is Ertl looking at offering other vintage big iron pedals?

Answer #8:  We are looking at additional vintage pedal tractors, but do not want to remake a tractor that has already been done. We will see what other models we can produce that won't hurt the existing pedals.

Question #9:  The Ertl/Britains 1/32 line has really expanded in 2003 with 4 new combines, 3 2wd CNH tractors and the John Deere 7920. With a shelf edition John 7020  and a Collectors 7520 4wd on the way in 2004, could collectors also expect to see more vintage 4wds and possibly 2wds in the growing 1/32 line from Ertl.

Answer #9: We are working on another vintage 4WD for the Toy Farmer in 2004.  We are also going to expand the 1/32nd line with additional modern tractors and implements as well.  We have over a dozen new tools in the works for 1/32 Britains/Ertl.

Question #10:  Ertl had an excellent presentation of new toys at the Factory Show room and on the Ertl display at the high school during the National.  Were all the new toys for 2003 and early 2004 on display or are there more surprises in store?

Answer #10:  There are more surprises in store.  We have well over $1 million dollars in new tooling planned for 2004.  We hope you like all of them...
