5088
The 5088 was a tractor that fit well into almost any size operation as a big power tractor on a medium sized farm or dairy and as supplemental power on large spreads. The 5088 was powered by a 6 cylinder turbocharged 135 hp engine. The 5088 had 18 forward gears and 6 reverse which were easy to shift using the all new fully synchronized constant-mesh transmission. Ertl kicked of the toy 88 series in December 1981 with Special Edition 5088. 13,800 units were run and each IH dealer received 18 models. The 5088 was imprinted with a die-cast stamp stating Special Edition 12/81 and was boxed in a brown shipping box stating the "New Number 1." Many IH dealers just discarded the box so a NIB 12/81 5088 will bring $70. In 1982 the 1/16 shelf 5088 was released in a tan box. The 1/16 5088 also came in a rare set that came in box that built a card board barn and included a plow, disk, wagon and plastic cow. In 1982 the first 1/64 5088 came out. A mistake was made and it had red wheels. This would not be the only variation in fact there would be 20 different 5088 variations by the time production ended in 1988. The 5088 came in the the DIE-CAST Tractor orange and white card as well as in its last three years a red, blue and white Farm Machines card. It also came on a hauling set and in a farm set including a wagon and 2400 round baler. There were several style variations including wide silver striped grille and a black narrow grille, square and tapered air flow grilles and several wheel variations.
