Federal Yellow Era of 4wd Power

The International Harvester 4156 was introduced in 1969 and replaced the popular 4100 produced from 1965-1968. Over 2,000 4100 models were produced by IH. Only 218 4156s were produced from 1969 to 1971, when the 4166 replaced it.  The 4100 and 4156 were painted Federal Yellow because Hough IH's industrial division had developed the 4wd along with their Pay-Loader line. The 4100 and 4156 shared technology with IH's big row crop tractors the 806 and 1206.  The 4156 was a power house in its day with a engine rated at 140 hp.  The only difference between a 4100 and a 4156 were the decals. IH 4wds were the first 4wd many farms owned.  The rigid frame design of the 4156 gave the operator a choice of two or four wheel drive steering. The 4156 had a 100 gallon fuel tank that helped extend the work day in the field. A 3pt hitch, pto and cab were optional on the 4156. Front mounted weights were necessary to maintain tractor balance and traction. Matsen Miniatures produced a very clean and fairly detailed 1/64 4156 in the early 1990's. Today the 1/64 4156 sells for around $45.
