FREE TOY BUILDING CLASSES

Hi everyone, I will be starting free toy building classes to help everyone enjoy the hobby more. Also to help you get the basics so you can build your own toys that no one else makes or are to rare and expensive to buy.

The reason I am doing this is because I get so much enjoyment from building models that I want to share it with everyone . I feel very lucky to have such a great hobby. The second reason is because I want to help the hobby continue to grow and encourage new people to get interested in it. Claire Scheibe and the Toy Farmer Magazine has really changed my life , they have been very good to me and I am going to help Cathy in any way I can with the hobby. This is the way I have chosen to help. Beginning mid-Jan.     I will start by building a 1/32nd grain cart project. I will go step by step showing each piece that needs to be drawn on paper to so you all have a pattern of each piece needed. Then I will show everyone how to assemble the Grain Cart . Each week I will add new information showing the next step to the model until it is completed. When it is done, we will see how well it went and I will decide if I will continue on to the next project.  This has never been done before, most toy builders do not give out how they build toys. This is my contribution to the hobby and this is my way of thanking everyone at Toy Farmer Magazine.

This is only a trial run, but if it works, I will eventually show how to build logging trucks, drop deck semi's, and many other trucks, also construction equipment. Tell your friends to sign up on   (ToyTractorShow.com ) to let Jason Hasert and I know how much interest this would be to you.    NOTE :  this is for fun , !  no one should be worried your first few projects won't turn out!!. Mine first few looked pretty lousy too.!!  But if you try , many of you will get it and some of you will end up being future toy builders. I encourage all of you to build and sell a few toys to help pay for your hobby.   I get no pay for this from anyone, I will tell everyone all my building methods as my gift in memory of (Claire ). He had a vision to help everyone with his Toy Farmer Magazine , and this is my way of helping to continue his dream.

If we can get 75 people to sign up for this first project, I will draw a name out of a hat next year of the 75 or more people who show us their projects, and I will donate one of my hand-built models. If the first group is under that number I will still give the classes but will hold off on giving away any of my models. The point here is for everyone to tell others, my goal is to continue to make the hobby grow, I know you all know someone who would be interested in doing this, spread the word about ToyTractorShow.com and my web page http://www.doncampbellmodels.com. If this takes off, we'll talk about this the rest of our lives.   It will be very exciting.

Sincerely,

Don Campbell

Step #2

MATERIALS NEEDED TO BUILD A 1/32nd STEEL GRAIN CART.

  1. 1. one piece of 1/8" square key stock - used for side rails on lower frame
  2. 2. one pieces of 3/16" square key stock- used for main frame and tongue
  3. 3 one piece of 1/2" steel tubing - used for unloading auger
  4. 4. one piece of 3/32 brazing rod - used for ladder and auger support rods
  5. 5. one piece of 18ga. or 20ga. - used for box 12" wide X 7.5 in. long-
  6. 6. one piece of 1/8in. inside dia. steel brake line
  7. 7. one piece of 3/16in. inside dia. brake line
  8. 8. two flotation tires.
NOTE: Items 1.,2.,3.,5 I buy from Home Depot , hardware stores should too. Items 4. ,6., 7 , I buy from farm stores. Item 8- I buy at Wal-mart or K-B toys, big foot truck for $5.00. other than the piece of sheetmetal , this will build two grain carts. If some of you want to split the cost and buy two pieces of sheet metal it will be cheaper yet.

NOTE: The keystock I buy at Home Depot is sold in 36" lengths, and so does the 1/2in. steel tubing , so get a minimum of 36". Brake lines are 48" long, the pieces I buy.

Tomorrow I will post the tools needed to build the grain cart from steel.

Step #3

Hi everyone, Thanks for all your nice compliments about my website. We have 63 people registered. Now it's time to see if we can all build a grain cart over the internet. Everyone needs to make the 1/32nd pattern first . Then you can all do your own math to scale it down to 1/64th or up to 1/16th. I have many other committments , but I still want to try to help everyone better understand how you can make your own models. When I see everyone has made their pattern , we will move on to the next stage of the project. You are welcome to make your own versions of grain carts. This can just be your guidlines to help you get started. I hope many of you make several different carts in different sizes and colors Please be considerate of the slower younger people trying to do this project, I am doing it just as much for them too. . Be patient as I have never tried to explain how to build toys before. I am finding out it is easier to make them than it is to explain how others can make them. After we all get the frame and axle step done, we'll move on to the box . Then steps to mount the box, Then the auger , etc, etc. I will post answers to any questions each night on TTS . That way everyone can read them. Remember, This for FUN, these are only models to me. And this is for everyone to have fun I built this from three pictures and 5 measurements. It can't be exact scale but the width, length, and height are very close to 1/32nd. Lets all make this a fun positive project . I am pretty sure Toy Farmer will enjoy putting this project in a future issue with many of your grain carts.

Thanks , Don
