Classic Combines

September 2001: by Nate Schlief and David McCormack

Nate Schlief

The 756 and  82 combine are owned by my dad, Doug Schlief and the 806 and 402 combine is owned by my uncle, DuWayne Douvier.  Both farm south of Glenwood, MN about 135 miles northeast of Minneapolis.  My uncle came over and helped my dad with his oat harvest this year and I snapped a couple pictures as they were finishing up.

The 756 was built in the early '70s and the 806 in the mid '60s.  The combines are of similar vintage.

This Case 660 was built in 1966 and still sees regular grain harvests every year. The combine is used exclusively for harvesting oats. It is powered by a Case 66 HP 4 cylinder gasoline engine. The drive train consists of a 3 forward 1 reverse gearbox coupled with a variable belt drive that is hydraulically controlled. A 10' cut grain platform handles the cutting duties. Some optional equipment such as power steering, hydraulic reel to cutter bar height lift and variable speed cylinder drive with cylinder speed tachometer are present as well. There are no electronics or automatic header lift control on this machine. Header height is controlled manually by a direct hydraulic lever.  Header height is adjusted constantly to harvest effectively on uneven fields. There is no cab on this particular 660 although cabs were available. An aftermarket seed separator has been mounted above the grain tank and all harvested grain passes through this, grain goes to the main tank while smaller seeds such as weeds are deposited into a collection bag on the side of the machine.
