TTS Farm Toy Report: August 2004 Issue #27

TTS-Times

August has been another busy month for new farm toys.  John Deere has announced several new models in 1/16, 1/32 and 1/64.  Look for more John Deere toys to be announced in November. The Toy Tractor Times announced its 21st Anniversary Tractor would be a 1/16 1977 International 1086.  Spec-Cast is staying busy with implements offering a new 1/16 detailed New Idea corn picker.  To top off a great month of new toy news the 2004 Fall Farm Show Collectors Editions have been released by Ertl and Scale Models.

Sweet corn is one of the great summer foods.  August is the month for sweet corn harvesting.   I had a chance to visit Swedes Farm in Western, New York State in August to photograph their sweet corn harvest.  It is  interesting to watch the Byron harvesters cut through the field picking tons of corn.  I decided to create a 1/64 display replicating the sweet corn harvest. This months Farm Toy Report picture features a C&D Models 1/64 Byron 8400 sweet corn picker on the display.  I will feature the steps of building the sweet corn lay out in an upcoming issue of The Toy Tractor Times.

New Toy News

AGCO

Spec-Cast has another classic implement on the way from its high detail resin series.  The New Idea corn picker is legend across corn belt and any where that corn has been harvested. The 1/16th New Idea 311 2 Row Corn Picker/Husker Detailed Resin will be available from Spec-Cast and participating AGCO dealers.

AGCO's 2004 Fall Farm Show tractor is the 1/64 Challenger MT765 by Scale Models with "Farm Show Edition 2004" imprinted on cab top of tractor.  It is 1 of 500.

CaseIH

The Toy Tractor Times Anniversary Series continues to grow in 2004 with the 21st Anniversary 1977 International 1086.  The slogan for the TTT 1086 says it all:  "Your Old Friend Has a New Look".  Ertl has taken the 86 series body and made a new model by taking IH 1466 Precision parts (real dual wheels & tires and front weight bracket with 12 individual weights), along with added cab/chassis light detailing and correct exhaust pipe.  Large flotation style front tires and rims add to this tractors rugged look.  Could this be the future of true "collector" farm toys from Ertl by combining parts from precision series with "shelf" model. TTT's IH 1086 is the second in the Big 70s' Power Series that started in 2003 with the 1973 Allis-Chalmers 7030.  The Toy Tractor Times has celebrated each anniversary since 1986 with a 1/16 scale tractor.  To see all 19 TTT tractors click here.  To order your 2004 TTT visit  www.toytractortimes.com

The 2004 CaseIH Fall Farm Show tractor is a 1/16 scale DX33 Farmall.  The new CaseIH Farmall line represents the proud red Farmall Heritage and offers modern power and convenience for farm chores, landscape work or just about any other job needed.  The 1/16 CaseIH Farmall DX33 is made by Scale Models with steerable front, roll bar, 3 pt. hitch, imprinted with "Farm Progress Show 2004" on the operator platform.

The 50th Anniversary Precision IH Farmall 400 with  a 34-455 4 Row Front Cultivator & Rear Tool Bar from Ertl was targeted for release this summer. This special Precision  has now been delayed for release to late 2004.

John Deere

The new John Deere 8000 series kit was announced this month.  It will feature a windowed cab and will include decals for the 8320 and 8220.  This is the second 1/16 John Deere kit produced by Ertl.  In 1992 Ertl offered a 1/16 7800 kit.

The 2004 1/16 Fall Farm Show Edition John Deere is the 7820.  The Deere Fall Farm Show series started in 1999 with the 8310 and was followed by the 2000 9300T, 2001 7510, 2002 6320 and 2003 8320.

Britains has released the new 1/32 John Deere 4020.  TTS first reported on this model in December 2003 and now we get our first look at the 32nd scale 4020.    The 1/32 4020 is the latest model in the expanding RC2 Ertl/Britains farm toy line.  This model will make a nice counter part to the 1/32 John Deere 7020 and 7520 4wds.  It is the first classic 2wd tractor offered in 1/32 and hopefully is the start of things to come from John Deere, CaseIH and AGCO.

The John Deere 7500 will be released by Ertl/Britains in the fall of 2004 in 1/32 scale.  This model offers realistic detail and both a kemper head for corn and a hay head for grass and alfalfa.

The 1/32 European John Deere 9880 STS has been released to United States and Canadian John Deere dealers.   The 9880 STS offers the same high detail as the collectors edition 9860 STS released by Ertl in the fall of 2003.  This model has a 30ft grain head and a European style grain bin.  The 9880 is John Deere's largest combine in Europe.

Thanks to the innovative Single Tine Separation (STS) threshing and separating system, the 9880 STS can handle loads that would choke a conventional rotary.
bullet465 horsepower, 12.5L John Deere engine.
bullet11,000 litre grain tank.
bullet3500 l/m clean grain elevator capacity.
bullet945 litre fuel tank.
bulletChange from crop to crop as quickly as you change your mind.
bulletFrom quick and easy platform swaps to residue disposal options. The STS combines can be tailored to perform flawlessly in practically any crop, any condition, raising your overall productivity.
bulletA dual range separator drive provides a wide range of speeds to match conditions.
bulletNew automatic combine adjustment (ACA) is also a feature.

In July CaseIH announced a new 8' STX 500 and 450 Steiger with dozer blade and removable duals.   John Deere will also offer 8" 4wds this fall.  The new 8' 9520 will be packaged chisel mulcher.

The 8' John Deere 9620 will be released this fall by Ertl.  This model and the 9520 with the ripper feature a removable dozer blade and duals.   The suggested retail price for the 9620 is only $10.95.  That type of price makes the new 8" farm toys very affordable.

Ertl will release a new 8' John Deere 8520 with all around duals and front end loader.  This farm toy is called 8' rather than 1/32 because it is meant to be a play toy rather than a collectors replica.

An 8" John Deere 8420 with all around duals and front end loader will be packaged with the new 1/32 scale Fronteir CC1110 grain cart coming out this fall.

Ertl has a new John Deere loader tractor on the way.  Look for a 1/64 7320 with hydra-push spreader at participating John Deere dealers this fall.

The latest 1/64 Sound-Gard from Ertl is the John Deere 4455.  The 4455 has fwa and will be packaged with a disk.  The prototype is pictured here in the TTS Farm Toy Report.  The final production replica will use the 4450.

The 1/64 JD 9620 4WD by Ertl with flotation duals (800/70R38) has Farm Show 2004 imprinted on cab top and is 1 of 5000.  It is packaged in the John Deere Fall Farm Show box and has dark windows in cab. It is sixth in John Deere series of Fall Farm Show tractors.  The 1/64 series started in 1999 with an 8410 with rear triples, 2000 was a 9300T, 2001 was a 9750 STS combine with duals,  2002 was an 8320T and 2004 was a 7920.

John Deere continues to honor is founders 200th Birthday with a new 10 piece historical set.  John Deere was born on February 7, 1804 and invented the modern moldboard plow in 1837.  John Deere's plow went on to build a legacy in farm equipment.  Ertl selected 10 of the most significant John Deere tractors to honor the 200th Anniversary of John Deere's birth.  This set highlights land mark tractors in Deere & Company's line from 1918-2004.  The set includes the Waterloo Boy, Unstyled D, Unstyled G, Styled B, 730, 4020, 4430, 4450, 8400 and 9520.  For more pictures and information on the set visit:  http://www.toytractorshow.com/new_toys.htm

New Holland

The 500 hp TJ500 is New Holland's 2004 Fall Farm Show Tractor.  The 1/64 New Holland TJ 500 by Scale Models with spacer triples, inscription: "Farm Progress Show 2004" stamped on hood of tractor.  This is the first 1/64 500 hp TJ500.  Look for a shelf edition TJ500 with dished duals later in 2004

August Top Ten Question and Answer with Bill Walters RC/Ertl Farm Toy Manager
TTS-Farm Toy Report Top Ten

Question 1. How many new tooled 1/64 items are up for release in 2005?

Answer 1. We've been hitting 1/64th pretty hard the last few years.  I think you will see a slow down from previous years.  Right now it looks like less than 10 new tools, but things do have a way of changing based upon new introductions from the OEMs.

We do have a couple of 1/64th items that were planned for late 2004 that will most likely slip into early 2005 that might make this number larger.

Question 2. What is the future of 1/16 and 1/16 Precision farm implements?  I know you often mention implements are much lower.  I thought the CNH DMI 530B rippers and John Deere 2700 mulcher were great in 1/16.  Does Ertl have plans in 2005 or 2006 to do more 1/16 implements?  Any chance for a new Precision implement?

Answer 2. We are still pursuing new 1/16th implements in both regular and Precision detail.  In fact, the next JD Collector Center Precision is a 40 with mounted plow.

Question 3. Does Ertl offer extra layout items like road, ballast , and trees...things of nature?   Who ever puts the displays together for buildings (like the new horse stable barn)  does a nice job!  Will Ertl ever show  a display of a complete farm or setup with all of or most the products they offer?

Answer  3. We hired this out to Companies that do displays such as this.  For a short time we did offer accessories, but the sales were disappointing and they were dropped.

Question 4. There was talk of the new Key Series Precision line for CaseIH and John Deere replacing the original Ertl Precision line.  Will the new series include New Holland and AGCO too?

Answer  4.  You should see others as well in the new KEY Series Precisions.

Question 5. When you asked for our opinion on Resin and how we felt...how do you & Ertl feel about testing this medium? Would you be more likely to use Resin to offer short run implements such as Beet Pickers, Potato Harvesters, etc.. or to offer short run tractors like what SpecCast is doing with the IH Turbine HT-340 and such? And what scale(s) would you be apt to try it out on?

Answer  5. As you know, we've done a few items in resin, like the 1/32 New Holland TG 285 and 255 mostly in 1/32nd scale, but as you've seen with Spec Cast and others, really any scale can be done.

Question 6. Ertl has announced several new tractors called 8" scale.  These models would be the CaseIH STX 450 and 500 Steiger with removable duals and dozer blades, John Deere 9620 and 9520 with removable duals and dozer blades and John Deere 8520 and 8420 with loader and all around duals.  Why were these models not called 1/32 scale?

Answer  6. We didn't make it a scale, because it is not a true replica.  These are basic toys, that are to a common size and price point.  These are not for collectors, but for kids who want a farm toy to play with.  They are somewhat close in size to 1/32nd so that some of our basic 1/32nd implements will work with them, but that was not the deciding factor.

Question 7. What is the out look for new Ertl Farm Country Sets in 1/64?

Answer  7. Based upon current sales, this is hard to justify.  Kids have moved away from our current sets for a lot of different reasons.  We have to look at a fresh approach for our farm sets and see where the current market is.

Question 8. Ertl releasing a 1/64 Allis-Chalmers D-19  with the Hinker Cab on October 20th, will there be a 1/16 scalteto go along with it, and could it possibly have duals.

Answer  8. We looked at trying to put the Hiniker Cab on the D-19 and it wasn't going to be easy.  Right now we have no plans, but things can change.

Question 9. What is the process  taken to tool a new 1/64 tractor?

Answer  9.  When you look at tooling a new tractor, you first determine how many different types of molds you have to make.  For a 1/64th tractor, you would normally have one mold for the diecast parts (body halves) and one mold for the plastic parts (cab roof, fenders, exhaust) and then a mold for tires if you have to tool new.

Question 10. With the fall harvest approaching is Ertl looking at producing any more 1/64 classic combines?  The International 1480 Axial-Flow and John Deere Titan combines are asked for collectors over and over .  Is Ertl looking at any updates for modern combines?

Answer  10.  Thanks for all of your suggestions.  The 7720 and 1460/1480 do come up quite often.  We are looking at both of these. We have also talked about draper heads for newer combines.
