TTS Farm Toy Report: April 2004 Issue #23

TTS-Times

On April 27, 2000 ToyTractorShow.com was introduced to the world wide web.  With the release of the 23rd TTS farm Toy Report  we mark our 4th Anniversary.  Four years ago TTS started as a website to show model tractors and their history with the real models.  As time passed a message board was added and a strong relationship grew with collectors and toy makers.  Today TTS is enjoyed by collectors world wide as one of the top resources for farm toy news.  Thank you to all of our readers and members for your support and interest in the site.

Spring is in full gear.  New toy news is slowing down as many of the winter announcements are now showing up on dealers shelves.  John Deere and Case-New Holland have introduced a wide range of toys in 1/16, 1/32 and 1/64.  The 2004 AGCO catalog is just days away and you can count on TTS to bring it to you first.  The month of June will bring the next wave of new toy surprises.  The new toys released in the past four months are just the tip of the iceberg for 2004.

Just a reminder:  In June 2004 we will run an auction on e-bay with farm toys donated by our sponsors and members.  If you would like to support the TTS Auction with a farm toy donation contact Jason Hasert at webmaster@toytractorshow.com.  We already have several items in for the auction and some great custom pieces on the way.  We will give you a preview of some of the auction pieces in the May Farm Toy Report.  Look for a major donation announcement in the May Toy Tractor Times.  It will be a big surprise.

If you have articles or ideas for the Farm Toy Report or all new ToyTractorTimes.com  e-mail Jason Hasert at Webmaster@toytractorshow.com.

ToyTractorShow.com EST. April 27, 2000

April 27, 2004 marks ToyTractorShow.com's 4th Anniversary.  TTS reports on farm toy news for collectors world wide. We have watched the selection, detail and quality grow over the past few years.  ToyTractorShow.com began reporting on the hottest new farm toys four years ago.  Here is a flash back of the big new toy releases in the year 2000.  What were collectors talking about four years ago?  In precision the 1/16 John Deere 4440 and new Precision II 1/32 scale 9750 STS John Deere combine were big news.  In 1/16 scale the STX 440 Steiger 4wd, was brand new. 1/64 collectors were surprised by a John Deere 1900 Commodity Cart, AG-Chem 1254 Row-Gator and classic corn pickers.

New Toy News

AGCO

Ertl has produced the  8th Firestone Series Tractor.  It is Allis Chalmers D-19.  This D-19 will be a limited production  and each model will have a serial number.

There is a new 1/16 scale AGCO set.  The set includes an Allis-Chalmers WD-45 narrow  front  with a barge wagon.

Spec-Cast is producing the 2004 1/16 scale National Farm Toy Museum Tractor.  The 2004 Collectors tractor is an Oliver Super 77 high crop.  The model has the same high detail as other Spec-Cast tractors along with die-cast rims and a NFTM Collector's insert.   You can order the Super 77 high crop on-line at www.nationalfarmtoymuseum.com.

Spec-Cast keeps out rolling historic AGCO tractors.  The latest model is the Oliver 88 Wide Front Tractor. This highly detailed die-cast "precision" model features removable engine side-panels revealing the detailed engine. The model also has full hydraulic lines and a steerable front end.

CaseIH

CaseIH's new 1/64 Farmall set including the 100,200, 300 and 400 is now at participating.  This set helps commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Farmall Hundred series from International Harvester.  The display box highlights the Farmalls International Harvester heritage.

In February 2003 CaseIH introduced the 500 hp STX 500 Steiger.  Ertl has just introduced a 1/16 scale Case IH STX500 4WD Collector Edition 2 Piece Set with 1/64th Chrome Finish STX500.  This set is now at participating CaseIH dealers.

CaseIH has reintroduced the Farmall name into its tractor line.  International Harvester used the Farmall name on its row crop tractors from 1924-1974.  FARMALL built its legacy by combining versatility, performance and a functional design into a product package, which essentially drove the transition of American agriculture from the horse-drawn era to the mechanized agriculture we know today. The 14 new CaseIH Farmalls enter the fastest growing tractor category.  mOre compact/utility tractors are sold every year than any other size tractor.  The new CaseIH Farmalls line more than live up to FARMALL’s reputation.  Scale Models has produced a newly tooled 1/16 scale DX 33 Farmall. The model is a Case IH “Farmall” DX33 Collector Edition imprinted with “Intro March 2004”.

John Deere

In 1969, John Deere introduced the Custom Color Series of lawn and garden tractors and attachments. This equipment is often referred to as the "Patio Models."  The "Patio Models" were not painted in the traditional John Deere green but in custom colors. The tractor was painted in base Dogwood White. The seats and hoods were offered in four colors, Patio Red, Sunset Orange, April Yellow, and Spruce Blue. The attachments were painted in Dogwood White.

Common features on all four tractors: The hood opens to reveal the engine, battery, and gas tank, movable hydrostatic shift lever, movable hydraulic levers,  movable throttle lever, movable choke lever, spring-loaded brake pedals, spring-loaded engine disconnect pedal, rotating the steering wheel will turn the front tires.

The classic John Deere 8020 4wd is  at participating John Deere dealers.   The 8020 was John Deere's first 4wd tractor.  In 1958 John Deere introduced the 8010 4wd.  The 8010 was recalled and rebuilt and returned as an 8020.  The 8020 was produced through 1964.   The 8020 was a 215 hp 8 bottom plow tractor.

New Holland

The 1/64th  New Holland Semi hauler with the TG255 & TG285 tractors is Ertl's first hauling set since the fall of 2001.  The new 1/64 TG tractors included in this set have large European style flotation tires.

Ertl has brought back the 1/16 New Holland “Hayliner" Square Baler with Bales.   This baler is a replica of New Holland's 1980's square baler with pan type kicker.  The kicker ejects the bales into a trailing  wagon.   The 1/16 model replicates the kicking action.

New for 2004 is the New Holland TS135a with Backhoe Attachment & Rear Scraper Blade.  This utility set is perfect for sand box work.

There is a new blue variation.  Ertl has announced a 1/16 scale New Holland TS125A European Edition.

April Top 10 Question And Answer by Bill Walters RC/Ertl Farm Toy Manager
The April Top 10 will be our last interview with Bill Walters from Ertl for a few months.  The TTS Farm Toy Report will interview other farm toy makers on their plans and out look for 2004 and beyond.
Question #1:  As spring moves ahead it will not be long before hay production starts. Many collectors have hoped that Ertl will look at adding some new haying items to its line.  The John Deere 7500 self-propelled chopper was a great start in 2003 but other than that item Ertl has not had a new hay and forage tooling since the 1990's.  Are there any plans  for new hay items in any of the scales for 2004 or beyond.

Answer #1:  We do have both Self Propelled and pull type hay equipment planned for 2004/2005 in all 3 major scales.  The next 12 months should make hay equipment collectors happy.  All major brands are represented.

Question #2:  Ertl has added lots of details to its products in recent years which has lead to increased packaging to protect the detailed farm toys and models. Some items like the 1/16 CNH and John Deere rippers are tied down with wires that are almost impossible to remove when opened by collectors.  Is Ertl looking at any packing changes that balance protection and opening.

Answer #2: Packaging plays an important role in both protecting the product, and also helping the retailer display it for sale.  We do transportation testing on all of our packaging to make sure it can withstand the shipment from China, then from our distribution center in Dyersville, IA to whatever store or dealer purchases it.  We don't necessarily like wire ties, but in certain circumstances they work better, and are cheaper, than other methods.  We are always looking at new ways, including blisters, reinforced cardboard and other methods.

Question #3:   Will Ertl ever look at offering another Precision Classic 4wd tractor?

Answer #3: Yes, we have another vintage 4WD Precision in the works.

Question #4:  Ertl has done an outstanding job on 1/64 combines in the past few years. Does Ertl have plans for additional modern or classic combines in 2004.

Answer #4:  We do have a vintage combine planned for late 2004, early 2005

Question #5:  Ertl released several new lego style John Deere toys in recent weeks. Is this an item that will remain unique to the John Deere toy line or will other brands offer lego style farm toys?

Answer #5: This product is done as a joint venture with another Company.  At the present time, they are only interested in John Deere.

Question #6:  Ertl has done a great job in recent years with the 1/64 John Deere 42ft John Deere field cultivator, John Deere Mulch Ripper and CNH disc-rippers. One item that is starting look small in comparison to the new tillage items is the 1/64  Ertl tandem disk.  Would Ertl consider offering a larger newly tooled disk?

Answer #6: There is nothing in our current tooling plan for a new disk, although we do realize it is getting outdated.

Question #7: The new 1/32 tractors and combines for all of the brands have been nice. One thing that would tie the tractors and combines together would be implements.  In general does Ertl have plans for 1/32 scale implements?

7.  Yes, we do have some 1/32nd implements planned both for North America and Europe.  As stated in the first question, 1/32nd hay equipment is planned for 2004/2005.

Question #8:  Why is Ertl coming back with John Deere Patio Series Lawn and Garden tractors?

Answer #8:  The original Patio series replicas are very sought after, yet 99% of the collecting public aren't able to buy them.  As we continued our Lawn and Garden Precision Series, we felt they would be a great collectible piece.  These Precision units will not stay in our line, but will only be produced once.  We feel this will keep them very collectible and limited.

Question #9:  How come you do not have more new AGCO releases?   We are not the primary replica maker for AGCO.

Answer #9:  We do have other releases planned for 2004 that are not listed on this flyer.  Look for additional updates later in the year.

Question #10:   Are there any other OEMs you are interested in producing replicas of?

Answer #10:  We are actually working with H&S on a couple of 1/64th units, and with Versatile/Buhler to produce their current 4WD in 1/32nd scale.

Potato Planting on the Model Farm

The Weekly Farm Journal has become a popular topic on TTS Toy Talk.  Collectors with displays report on the progress their model farm is making this spring.  The topic is started each Saturday afternoon by TTS member JD_Dairy.   Most model farms raise corn and beans.  John Schomburg wowed many TTS members with his Farm Journal post showing a potato operation in 1/64.  Here is a recap from TTS toy Talk of spring potato planting in 1/64 scale.
