End of an Era

Ertl Collectors Edition 4994

NZG 4994 and Ertl PTO 4994

The 400 hp Case 4994 was the largest crab steer 4wd ever sold by Case. It
was introduced in 1984 with a Saab turbo charged V-8 engine. This tractor
was a proverbial locomotive in the field. Unfortunately this monster was
based of the smaller 94 series 4wds transmissions and axils which lead to
multiple mechanical problems and failures. As a result of the 4994's short
falls only 200 models were sold between 1984 and 1988. In 1988 many of the
articulating Steiger models acquired by Tenneco for J.I. Case in 1987 had
replaced the Case 4wds. The crab steer 4494 and 4694 remained in the line
until 1990. Case International offered its last true crab steer model on a
Steiger based 300 hp model 9260 from 1990-1995. In 1995 when the 9300 series
4wds were released Case IH began offering a hybrid version of the old
Traction King steering and articulated Steiger. The Case IH Steiger 9330 and
9350 Row-Crop Special models offer the best of both technologies with front
knuckle steering and rear articulation. Several toy versions of the 4994 were offered.

In 1986 Ertl offered a 1/16 Collectors Edition 4994 with duals and a shelf model with singles.  Ertl also offered a 1/32 Power model with live pto that came with a side spreader and dumping barge wagon.  NZG offered a high detail 1/32 version of the 4994. Roy Lee Baker offered a limited run of 1/64 4994's for the 1996 St. Louis Toy Show.
