THE AXIAL-FLOW COMBINE

When Tenneco began looking at IHC's Agricultural Group in 1984, it was
because its J.I. Case subsidiary wanted combines, not the IH tractor line.
J.I. Case decided to focus on producing high horse power tractors and
dropped its Combine and most of its implement line. The last Case models
produced in 1972 were the 1660 and 1665 Corn Special. Tenneco's decision
to stop Combine production was because their models were 10 years behind
the competitors models technology and R&D funds could not be justified
with potential sales of a new model. Thirteen years later Case returned
to the combine market with the newly acquired Axial-Flow combine. IH was
working on releasing an updated Axial-Flow series for 1986, so Case
unveiled the models as the 1680, 1660, 1640 and 1620. In 1989 the models
became the 1688, 1666, and 1644 with minor improvements that farmers were
looking for in the popular combines. The increasing costs of combines and
growing size of farms did not make it feasible for Case International to
 offer a 1622 model. Ertl offered a 1/64 collectors edition 1660 combine
and later a shelf model 1660 and 1666. This was one the first truly 1/64
 combine models from Ertl.
